Biden administration faces new hurdle as House Speaker discusses constitutional limitations with Trump

House Speaker Mike Johnson has revealed that he recently discussed constitutional limitations with former President Donald Trump, emphasizing that there is no time left to modify the founding document to allow the Republican to seek a third term in the White House.

Trump, who is currently 79 years old, has avoided a definitive statement on whether he will pursue a third presidency, fueling ongoing speculation about his potential bid for a continuation of his tenure.

Johnson made his remarks to reporters during a press conference in Congress on Wednesday. He confirmed that his last conversation with Trump had taken place just an hour before the President’s recent Asian tour.

Reflecting on the constitutional amendment process, Johnson explained that it would require approximately ten years to complete, as it needs the approval of two-thirds of Congress members and four-fifths of state legislatures. He expressed his belief that such a pathway is not feasible.

“This is a glorious journey,” Johnson stated, referring to the constitutional amendment process. “I believe the President is well aware of the constitutional limitations, and we did discuss it. However, I don’t see a way forward for modifying the Constitution under the current circumstances.”
